Motion City Soundtrack @ the rave
Last night at The Rave felt like walking straight back into the best parts of my teenage brain, except louder and sweatier and yet somehow more meaningful.
Motion City Soundtrack came out swinging. No slow build, no easing in. Just immediate energy and that familiar rush of synth and guitar that makes your heart explode in the best way. The room was packed with the kind of people who know every word and have known every word for years. You could feel it before the first chorus even hit.
When they launched into the classics, the entire floor turned into one massive singalong. “Everything Is Alright” just took the crowd by storm. I swear they were louder than the speakers. “L.G. FUAD” was chaotic in the best way, bodies bouncing, drinks sloshing, everyone screaming like it was 2006 and we all still had MySpace. “The Future Freaks Me Out” hit with that perfect mix of nostalgia and urgency, which honestly feels even more relevant now.
What I loved most was how tight they sounded. Justin’s vocals still have that frantic honesty that made so many of us fall in love with this band in the first place. The synth lines cut through everything clean and bright, and the rhythm section kept it all driving forward without ever feeling rushed. It did not feel like a band going through the motions. Their 20th time playing here and it still felt as energetic as the first.
The Rave was hot and sticky and loud and absolutely perfect for it. By the end of the night my voice was wrecked and my feet hurt, but in that deeply satisfying way that only happens when a show actually hits.
Some bands make you remember who you were. Motion City Soundtrack makes you feel like that version of you is still in there, screaming every word.
